Step 6 of 13
Get a municipal business licence
Your city or district licences businesses operating there.
- Time
- 1–2 hours
- Cost
- Varies by municipality
What to do
Apply through your city or district hall, usually online. Fees range from about $50 to a couple of hundred dollars a year.
Home-based business
Some municipalities require a home-occupation permit or limit customer visits and signage. Check before you apply.
Be upfront about what you sell
Tell them exactly what you will sell. Some municipalities have bylaws on adult-oriented retail. These often target storefronts, but you want to know before you start, not after.
Multiple municipalities
Some areas want a licence for each municipality you operate in. Ask if that applies.
